OBD2 readiness monitors: what “not ready” means
“Not ready” means the vehicle has not completed a particular emissions self-check. It is different from a fault code. An OBD2 scanner can display the status reported by the vehicle; it cannot guarantee that a monitor will complete or that the vehicle will pass an inspection.
Read the three pieces of information together
| Information | Question it answers | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Fault codes | Has the vehicle recorded a diagnostic condition? | The full code and its displayed status, not just a short description. |
| I/M readiness | Have the supported emissions self-checks completed? | Each supported monitor and its ready/not-ready status. |
| Check-engine light | Is the vehicle requesting attention through the warning lamp? | The lamp state and any symptoms, alongside the codes. |
Why a monitor may remain incomplete
The vehicle may need specific operating conditions to run a monitor. A battery disconnection, repair or clearing diagnostic information can require checks to run again. A fault can also stop a monitor from completing. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure; there is no universal distance that completes every monitor on every car. California BAR explains these dependencies in its OBD test reference. Its inspection thresholds apply to California, not every country or state.
A useful checklist before you clear anything
- Record your vehicle, engine and model year.
- Save the exact fault codes, their status and any available freeze-frame information.
- Record the readiness screen and the warning-lamp state.
- Investigate the fault or ask a qualified repairer about the next diagnostic step.
- After the appropriate repair and vehicle-specific procedure, read the status again.
The purpose of this record is to preserve the information that helps explain a fault. Clearing a display is not evidence that a repair is complete.
Which SKYVNO tools list readiness?
The supplied materials for V105, V320, V520 and V800 list I/M readiness. V105, V320 and V520 have dedicated displays; V800 requires a compatible phone and app. Compare current prices and the exact vehicle requirements on each page. A listed feature does not mean every vehicle provides the same data.
Does “ready” guarantee an inspection pass?
No. Readiness is only one part of the information an inspection program may use. Check the current requirements where your vehicle is registered and resolve diagnostic faults appropriately. We do not provide inspection-pass guarantees.
